The origins of G. Tarabochia & C. go back to the mid-nineteenth century when, by the will of an ancient family belonging to the island of Lussino. The Company was founded in 1864 in Trieste, to operate in the maritime field as “Shipping Agency and Rentals of Sailing Ships and Steamships of Regular Lines and Tramp”. At that time Lussino, an island not far from Trieste, was part of the Austrian Empire. Now it belongs to Croatia, under the name of Lošinj.
Since the first years of its activity Tarabochia represented the major Shipping Companies of that time as the Unione Austriaca di Navigazione, former Austro-Americana, and Navigazione a Vapore del Lloyd Austro Ungarico with regular scheduled services between Trieste and the North and South America, the Adriatic, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, North Europe, the United Kingdom and Norway.
For long time Tarabochia even managed embarking Italians emigrating to America, in connection with many offices there, dedicated to immigration and taking care assistance to these people. Our Company represented in Trieste Det Norske Veritas (The register of Norwegian classification) for over a hundred years.
Consequently Tarabochia soon developed its activities, and in the period before the First World War became the main Shipping Agency in Trieste, collaborating not only with the above mentioned Companies, but with all other shipowners of Trieste and Lussino which, at that time, they were numerous in both ports, as well as many foreign shipowners with some of which our Company is still operating, including some of the major Oil Companies in the world.
During the First and Second World War the activity of Tarabochia slowed down. After the wars Trieste lost some of its traffic but not our company that not only kept unchanged relations with historical customers but gained new shipowners who entrusted their vessels to our Company.
Currently Tarabochia, with more of 150 years of non-stop service, is one of the oldest Sipping Agencies of the Mediterranean. In addition to carrying out its activities as insurer, as average agent, as customs broker, as crew personnel and maritime logistics manager, as shipowner’s agent has a long and proven experience and an efficient organization in assisting the liners, tramps, Ro / Ro, passengers and all other types of ships.
